Arunachal Pradesh to concentrate on Adventure Tourism Projects

Arunachal Pradesh Tourism will now focus on adventure sports in a drive to start experiential tourism in the state and also to launch new tourism products. Besides promoting Eco and Culture Tourism, Arunachal Pradesh will invest heavily to procure adventure sport equipment, training and promotion of adventure activities in the state with direct help from the Ministry of Tourism (MoT).

The state will focus more on aero-sport adventure activities and wildlife exploration. With the introduction of four tourism circuits, the state has already identified a few destinations exclusively dedicated to wildlife tourism like Seijosa, which will be promoted as an Integrated Wildlife Sanctuary. Most destinations under the Destination Development Project and the four new tourism circuits like Machuka, Tuting etc. are being developed as adventure sport destinations. Targeting both domestic and international tourists, Arunachal Pradesh Tourism has already invited some renowned service providers in the adventure sport sector like Aqua Tera operating in Uttarakhand and Purvi Discovery of Assam, an organisation arranging all kinds of adventure activities in the North East. “We are acting as facilitator lending all kind of logistic and other support in order to start adventure sports in a professional manner,” stated Gedo Eshi, Assistant Director, Arunachal Pradesh Tourism.

On the potential of adventure tourism in the state Eshi said, “Our state has a thick forest cover and abounds in wildlife and rivers, thus giving us opportunities for extreme adventure sports. Travellers from across the globe have utilised our natural resources to indulge in adventure sports, long before the state became a one-stop destination for all kinds of adventure activities. Now we are augmenting the activities not only by offering best possible resources but also by relaxing Protective Area Permit and other norms. The allowed composition of groups exploring special sites of our state has been reduced to two or more from the previous four or more norm. We have received great support from MoT to make our state more accessible to foreigners.”

With regards to development of adventure activities Eshi informed, “We are in the process of procuring equipment of international standards. We have already acquired some equipment for aerosport like Microlites and other kayaking tools and camping equipment like Alphaing tents and igloo tents for camping in the forest. Apart from creating an inventory for tools and equipment, we are also planning to provide manpower support to operate such activities. Local youth and interested people will be sent to sport institutes in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, where adventure sports has picked up in a major way.”
